Curious about non-monogamy? Start here
Before you open anything, open the conversation. A blunt primer for people who are curious — not performing progressive theater.
Curiosity isn't a hall pass
Non-monogamy is not a personality upgrade, a fix for a dead bedroom, or a way to keep someone who already wants out. It's a relationship design that only works when honesty is already strong.
If you can't talk about jealousy without detonating, you are not ready for more partners. You're ready for couples therapy or a breakup — not a third calendar.
Name the actual want
Are you craving variety, honesty about existing attraction, community, queer freedom, or an escape hatch? Those are different projects. "I want an open relationship" is too vague to negotiate.
Be specific: sex only? dating? sleepovers? social media? Safer-sex rules? Vetoes? If you can't write the rules without getting evasive, pause.
Consent from everyone who matters
Surprise non-monogamy is cheating with better branding. Your partner has to want the structure — not tolerate it under threat of abandonment. New people deserve to know the shape of the agreement before they're mid-chemistry.
Start smaller than your fantasy
Talk first. Read second. Experiment third — if at all. Many couples discover that naming attraction honestly, without acting on it, already changes the relationship. That's useful data too.
Non-monogamy can be ethical, hot, and sustainable. It can also be chaos with a vocabulary. Know which one you're building.
